    Making Money Fast

Cirtas Systems, a cloud storage hardware company, is announcing today it has raised $22.5 million in a second round of funding and has named tech veteran Gary Messiana as its chief executive.

Small and medium businesses will care about this because it can help them cut costs. Storage systems are getting so complex that they require the architectural expertise of highly specialized people to solve. The amount of data in corporations is exploding so fast that it’s hard to keep up with storage growth needs. By shifting it to the cloud, or Web-based data centers that can be outside of a company’s physical premises, companies can offload the task to others and reduce costs.

Usually, there is a trade-off between the cloud and client-based hardware. The cloud can be slower, but Messiana (pictured below) said in an interview that his company has designed its cloud storage to be as fast as hardware on the customer’s site, mainly by caching frequently used data near the location where it will be accessed. Cirtas uses a hybrid of on-site and cloud storage.

The San Jose, Calif.-based company makes its Bluejet Cloud Storage Controller, a piece of storage equipment that sits in cloud-based data centers. Cirtas deploys Bluejet controllers in a customer’s data center. Bluejet functions just like an on-site storage array, and the technology seamlessly connects to and accelerates the performance of off-site cloud storage services, with fast response to user queries, said Messiana.

The product is aimed at medium and large enterprises and is available now. By tapping the cloud, the company hopes to solve complex security, performance and compatibility issues that stop companies from using cloud storage. One of the big benefits is that enterprises will be able to move their storage from one cloud service firm to another to get better pricing.

Cirtas said it has completed beta tests at more than a dozen enterprise customers across diverse markets. The company ties together techniques for optimizing networks to work with its virtualized storage arrays so that it can deliver what it calls the world’s first cloud-enabled storage system. The company’s first purchase order has come from beta user Robert Half International.

Cirtas said it can securely encrypt all data in transit to and from the cloud, making sure that only authorized users have access to data. If there is a security breach, the Bluejet technology can prevent data from being read or used, as administrators can control who has access. It can also anticipate storage costs and how they fluctuate. And it can manage data for speedy performance.

Cirtas raised money from Shasta Ventures and Bessemer Venture Partners. Existing investors also participating include New Enterprise Associates, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and Amazon.com. The company plans to use the money to expand its infrastructure and accelerate the adoption of its technology.

Amazon is one of the big advocates of cloud computing, which can give businesses more options and better control over how they purchase data storage. Cirtas’s approach to the cloud is tightly aligned with Amazon’s, said Jeff Blackburn, senior vice president of corporate development at Amazon. He said Amazon was most impressed with the ability of Cirtas to migrate large quantities of data into the cloud in a fast, secure, and cost-effective manner.

Beyond Amazon, Cirtas has also secured a strategic alliance with Iron Mountain, which offers archive services. The Cirtas Bluejet product costs $69,995 per appliance. It is available from a variety of industry resellers. The company said it is making free evaluation systems available to customers.

The company was founded in 2008 by Dan Decasper and Allen Samuels. Its team includes veterans of Citrix, DataDomain, NetApp and Riverbed. Cirtas has more than 30 employees. Rivals include storage vendors such as EMC and NetApp, Twinstrata, Nasuni, StorSimple and Panzura.

Messiana replaces Decasper, who will become chief technology officer. To date, the company has raised $32.5 million. Messiana was previously an entrepreneur in residence at Bessemer. Prior to that, he was CEO of Netli and CEO of Dilient Software Systems.

Today’s business news contains two seemingly unrelated stories, both on the energy front. The first tells the tale of Range Fuels’ foray into cellulosic ethanol, the process of making ethanol fuel, not from foodstuffs but from waste products such as wood chips. Even with government assitance with financing and with a Congressional mandate requiring customers to use their inferior fuel, Range Fuels’ project is a bust, to the tune of $250 million, a good bit of that taxpayer money.

    The Range Fuels Fiasco

As taxpayer tragedies go, Broomfield, Colorado-based Range Fuels has all the plot elements—splashy headlines, subsidies and opportunistic venture capitalists. Range got its start in 2006 when George W. Bush used a State of the Union address to extol wood chips as a source for cellulosic ethanol that would break America’s “addiction to oil.” Mr. Bush pledged that with government funding cellulosic ethanol would be “practical and competitive within six years.”

Vinod Khosla stepped in with his hand out. The political venture capitalist founded Range Fuels and in March 2007 it received a $76 million grant from the Department of Energy—one of six cellulosic projects the Bush Administration selected for $385 million in grants. Range said it would build the nation’s first commercial cellulosic plant, near Soperton, Georgia, using wood chips to produce 20 million gallons a year in 2008, with a goal of 100 million gallons. Estimated cost: $150 million.

    Fast forward to 2010:

… the EPA said Range would finally produce some fuel in 2010—but only four million gallons, not 100 million, and of methanol, not cellulosic ethanol. So taxpayers have committed $162 million (along with at least that much in private financing) to produce four million gallons of a biofuel that others have been making in quantity for decades. This politically directed investment might have gone to far more useful purposes.

    Compare and contrast…

…with the tale of the marketplace. Oil operators, encouraged by the phenomenal success of natural gas in the shale plays, are enjoying better-than-expected success in oil-prone shales:

New drilling method opens vast oil fields in US

Companies are investing billions of dollars to get at oil deposits scattered across North Dakota, Colorado, Texas and California. By 2015, oil executives and analysts say, the new fields could yield as much as 2 million barrels of oil a day - more than the entire Gulf of Mexico produces now.

This new drilling is expected to raise U.S. production by at least 20 percent over the next five years. And within 10 years, it could help reduce oil imports by more than half, advancing a goal that has long eluded policymakers.

How much of our time, wealth and national security must we fritter away wastefully, relearning the lessons that history has tried to teach us many times over?

By now you're probably aware of the importance of keywords and optimized web copy for articles, blog posts, and other web content as it relates to search engine rankings. Using keywords and specific phrases throughout your articles can make your content reach a higher search engine ranking as soon as it's published; the result is higher traffic and easy accessibility to your published piece all over the world wide web. If your goal is to make money online with blogs and articles, your focus needs to be on finding specific keywords and search phrases that people are looking for. Here are just a few free tools to find the top trends people are searching for:

Google Trends: One of the easiest search tools available online, allowing you to see what types of queries and requests Google users have been searching for recently. The nice thing about Google Trends is the side by side comparison; you can compare different searches if you're unsure what keywords are most relevant, and the Hot Trends list gives you a nice snapshot of what's on the world's mind at any given time

Use it for: finding out what's happening in pop culture and news

Avoid it if: you're looking for ideas on a niche; Google Trends are generally quite broad in scope, and are much better suited for brainstorming

Yahoo! Buzz Index: Another trends and 'hot items' preview, the Yahoo! Buzz index lists the most popular searches each day, as well as some insights and commentary on the top ten. This is another good choice for finding out what's happening around the world today, and will do little for keyword-specific content

Use it for: learning about where Paris Hilton ranks today

Avoid it if: you need to compare specific keyword searches and phrases; there are other much better tools to do this

DogPile Search Spy: this fun and user-friendly tool helps you discover what the world is searching for with its rolling list of different terms and phrases. The results aren't organized in any way, and are simply a snapshot of what's creating a stir on the internet. You'll find a wide range of obscure terms and keyword combos here, so proceed with an open mind. . .

Use it for: browsing on your lunch break to find out if the 'oceanic whitetip shark' is still popular

Avoid it if: you need structure and organization in your results reports

Lycos 50: One of the internet's most used search engine reporting sites, The Lycos 50 lists what people are searching for each week and how long the search has sustained itself on the movers and shakers list. It's a great spot to find yet even more information on the latest news, celebrity gossip, and pop culture that's making its rounds on the web today.

Use it for: Learning about Lindsay Lohan's latest and greatest

Avoid it if: You're looking for keyword statistics and graphs

Ask.com IQ: Ask.com is one of the web's more innovative and user-friendly search engines, pulling out all the bells and whistles to get your most important questions answered. The top searches list on Ask IQ is a conveneint stop to round up top searches, advancing searches, news highlights, and movies. The report contains information on the most popular search terms each week based on Ask.com searches only-another glimpse of the world's priorities.

Use it for: Finding out if Britney Spears is still newsworthy

Avoid it if: you're looking for article ideas that haven't already made the news

AOL Hot Searches: Despite AOL's limited capabilities as a search engine, AOL Hot Searches does offer a well-organized listing of search terms, reported within each category and subject. From top auto searches to the most popular TV shows, this is the place to get the top ten lowdown on almost any topic found on the AOL main page.

Use it for: Finding out if stock quotes, Hawaii vacations, and the Transformers movie are still a heavily searched items

Avoid it if: you're not writing anything related to pop culture or news

Instead of investing money into SEO webmaster toolkits and programs, it's easy to turn to many free resources available on the web. Writing about trends and using specific terms in your posts can help you gain much higher rankings with the top search engines.

What to do with those coupons that you impulsively bought off of Groupon, Living Social, Ideeli, or any of the many other discounted ‘deal of the day’ sites? Sell ‘em!

That’s right, there’s a site for everything these days, and selling coupons, while initially relegated to online bulletin board sites, such as Craig’s List, have established their own re-sale sites and are open for business.

In case you’re not in the know about these daily deal sites, they provide a great, affordable way to discover what a city has to offer by selling heavily discounted deals for services and products in your area or online - With deals like Living Social’s Amazon price buster, offering a $20 gift card for $10 and surpassing one million gift cards sold, there are sure to be some “miss-buys.” You thought you wanted, or needed it, but in the end it was something you were never going to use.

After doing a little investigation, I came up with several names of deal for “resale” businesses, with a few emerging as the leaders of the pack. DealsGoRound, CoupRecoup, and Lifesta are suddenly making an impact in the market.

Yael Gavish, co-founder of Lifesta, says she saw a need for a forum focused on the aftermarket. She had a friend visiting her in New York, who had purchased a Groupon certificate. Unfortunately, when the friend arrived, they discovered the restaurant was closed for renovations. Her friend was out the money, but the idea was created.

"People buy daily deals and they all work on the impulse buy," explains Yael Gavish of Lifesta.com. "So you think you're definitely going to this, but then, it turns out that 20-40 percent of these daily deals are never really used." Their site has seen a monthly growth of 50 percent, mainly through word of mouth.

A great solution for “buyers remorse” if I ever saw one!

Squidoo is a website that lets anybody create a page (lens) on any topic. A Squidoo lens is a bit like a web page (or mini blog) that you can fill any way you like. The great thing about Squidoo, is that it has Adsense already set up, so any lens you create will make you earn money. You can also use affiliate programs such as Amazon or Ebay, and easily display the products you like on your lens: people who buy those products will help you earn more money from your lens. The income generated by those ads is split between Squidoo, you and charities as follows: 45%, 50% and 5% (well, you didn't think they would let you make money that easily for nothing, did you?). I think this is a pretty good deal, as we all know how difficult it is to make a name for yourself in the big web world and being on the Squidoo website will give you and your lens a boost, as other user lenses get promoted on your lens (which means that your own lens gets promoted on other people's lenses as well).

One thing I like about Squidoo lenses is the layout: you can add different modules on your lens and each module can be used for a different purpose. Module are a bit like paragraphs; you can use one module to write some text, another one to add your blog's or your articles' RSS feed, one to promote Amazon products and anything else you can think about. You can add, change the order of or delete modules as you like, and Squidoo's advice is to update a lens at least once a week; any lenses that are not being updated regularly risk being deleted out of the system, meaning any money accumulated on those accounts will be lost forever by the lensmasters.

When I first started to use the Internet to make money, I suffered from information overload: so many money-making ideas being thrown at me but no real plan on how to use most of these in my advantage. I started too many projects without really knowing where I was going; I read a lot of articles saying that Squidoo was a good way to make money online so I created a Squidoo lens. I didn't really know how to use it until a few weeks ago, when another Associated Content producer sent me a message asking me if she could use the RSS feed of my articles to put on her Squidoo lens. Naturally I was very curious so I went and took a good look at it: it is called Know It All Moms and contains a lot of advice on children, parenting, homeschooling, women's health and money (that's where I come in).

The interesting thing about this Squidoo lens is that it doesn't require much maintenance; there is an introduction followed by the RSS feed of Lisa Carey's own articles, plus a few other RSS feeds, so the updating of her lens is being done automatically. One very positive thing about Lisa's lens is that it helps not only her own articles, but also other people's articles to get more page views, which means more money for her friends as well as for herself. She also uses Adsense and Amazon in order to earn money from her Squidoo lens.

Since most Associated Content producers write on a lot of different topics, I wouldn't really recommend using their RSS feeds, as this means you could get an article on the American election thrown in the middle of parenting articles, so selecting individual articles would be a safer bet. Another option would be to add the RSS feeds of different blogs, always with prior owner's consent of course, and this is what I have done with my own lens: How to Make and Save Money. Using RSS feeds is different from copying whole articles, so there is no risk of being penalized by Google for using duplicate content.

On top of the money you earn from programs such as Adsense, Amazon and and a few others that can be integrated in Squidoo lenses, you can use your own imagination to fill those modules with anything you fancy and that you can make money with (or not). The text modules let you include html so if you know a little about html, you can promote your affiliate links: the best example I can think of is Clickbank. I already wrote an article on how to write Clickbank reviews that sell, so I won't explain here how this affiliate programme works, all I will say is that if your lens is mostly about pets, you can write an article about pets and include a few pet related affiliate links in there.

You can use your Squidoo lens to advertise your freelance services, Ebay auctions, books you wrote and whatever else can be promoted on the Internet. There is no limit on the number of Squidoo lenses you can create (as long as they are not duplicates) and it doesn't cost a cent, so you can create your own Squidoo money-making empire, but if making money is not on your list of priorities, you can just talk about anything you like, use your lens like a small personal blog, and even set up your lens so that the money earned by it is sent to charities.

If you have a little bit of imagination, there has never been an easier way to make money online than this, and the main thing to remember if you want to make money with Squidoo, is to have fun doing it!

Acknowledgements: I would like to thank fellow Associated Content producer Lisa Carey for giving me the idea for this article and also for helping me understand a little bit more about how to make money online with Squidoo. You can find a link to her lens, Know It All Moms, in this article's resources box.
